About the choir

After a triumphant summer concert at the Sheldonian in celebration of the choir's 50th anniversary, Summertown Choral Society, a well-established mixed voice choir with around 160 members begins its next 50 years with a performance of Bach's challenging, but very rewarding Mass in B minor.

The choir traditionally holds two concerts each year - membership is just £70 for a year or £40 for a single concert term, and new members are welcome to attend the first few rehearsals of a term before deciding whether to join. We aim to foster a friendly, sociable atmosphere within the society, and we welcome new members of all ages, experienced or beginner without the need for an audition.

Since its foundation in 1961, SCS has performed a diverse range of choral music, from major works such as Brahms's German Requiem and Mozart's Great Mass in C minor to less familiar miniatures such as Britten's Five Flower Songs. Snippets from these and many other performances may be found on our concert history pages, along with photos and other memorabilia. Do dive in and have a look around!

The choir has been directed by Duncan Saunderson since 1996, with Julian Littlewood as accompanist from 1997.
