Come and Join Us!

Summertown Choral Society gives two concerts a year, generally in January/February and May/June, in North Oxford venues. The year consists of two terms, and runs from early September to May or June, with short breaks for Christmas and Easter.

Joining SCS

Summertown Choral Society welcomes new members of all ages, voices, and abilities. There is no audition. Just come along and sing with us in a rehearsal before deciding whether you’d like to join.

This term – from Thursday 10 February 2022 – we will be preparing for a performance of French Romantic Choral Music on 21 May 2022.

Summertown Warm Up

Recent programme:

Our most recent live concert was Handel’s Messiah, with Instruments of Time and Truth, on 29 January 2022.

Our previous concert before that was Bach’s B minor Mass, also with Instruments of Time and Truth, on 1 February 2020. We had hoped to perform Brahms’ Requiem, in English, again with Instruments of Time and Truth, on 23 January 2021. But, like all choirs, we were unable to meet or perform live from March 2020 onwards. We managed to keep going, however, on Zoom, during the whole of that period, with first the Brahms and other ‘Brahms-friendly’ pieces, and then, in the summer 2021 term, singing music chosen by the choir. (For details of both see the Next Rehearsal page.)

The concert planned for 21 May this year is one planned for June 2020, but which, again, we had to cancel.

Rehearsal time and venue:

Rehearsals normally take place on Thursday evenings, 8-9.30pm, in the Church of St Michael and All Angels, Summertown, between September and late May or early June. There is also an opportunity for a cappella singing with the Summertown Singers in the summer (a trip to Porto is planned for this August).

Membership fees

Membership costs for this term are £75. This includes music hire. The subscription is half-price for those under 30 and for full-time students over the age of 30, and may be waived or reduced for members in financial hardship.
