Come and Join Us!
Summertown Choral Society gives two concerts a year, generally in January/February and May/June, in North Oxford venues. The year consists of two terms, and runs from early September to May or June, with short breaks for Christmas and Easter.
Summertown Choral Society welcomes new members of all ages, voices, and abilities. There is no audition. Just come along and sing with us in a rehearsal before deciding whether you’d like to join.
This term – from Thursday 9 September 2021 – we are back singing live together again, preparing for a performance of Handel’s Messiah, in partnership once more with Instruments of Time and Truth, on 29 January 2022.
Our most recent live concert was Bach’s B minor Mass, with Instruments of Time and Truth, on 1 February 2020.
We then had to cancel our concert of French Romantic Choral Music planned for 6 June 2020.
We had hoped to perform Brahms’ Requiem, in English, again with Instruments of Time and Truth, on 23 January 2021. But, like all choirs, we were unable to meet or perform live from March 2020 onwards. We managed to keep going, however, on Zoom, during the whole of that period, with first the Brahms and other ‘Brahms-friendly’ pieces, and then, last term, singing music chosen by the choir. (For details of both see the Next Rehearsal page.)
Rehearsal time and venue:
Rehearsals normally take place on Thursday evenings, 8-9.30pm, in the Church of St Michael and All Angels, Summertown, between September and late May or early June. There is also an opportunity for a cappella singing with the Summertown Singers in the summer.
Membership costs for the first term of this year will be £75. This includes music hire. The subscription is waived for those under 30 and is half-price for full-time students over the age of 30, and may be waived or reduced for members in financial hardship.
