Come and Join Us!
Summertown Choral Society gives two concerts a year, generally in January/February and May/June, in North Oxford venues. The year consists of two terms, and runs from early September to May or June, with short breaks for Christmas and Easter.
Summertown Choral Society welcomes new members of all ages, voices, and abilities. There is no audition. Just come along and sing with us in a rehearsal before deciding whether you’d like to join.
Like all choirs, we are not able to meet or perform live at the moment, but, having rehearsed Brahms’ Requiem online last term, we started a new term of online rehearsals on Thursday 4 February, singing music chosen by the choir. For details of the programme and how to join, see our Next Rehearsal page and our Weekly Notices page.
Our most recent live concert was Bach’s B minor Mass, with Instruments of Time and Truth on 1 February 2020.
We then cancelled our concert of French Romantic Choral Music planned for 6 June 2020.
We had hoped to perform Brahms’ Requiem, in English, again with Instruments of Time and Truth, on 23 January 2021.
Rehearsal time and venue:
Rehearsals normally take place on Thursday evenings, 8-9.30pm, in the Church of St Michael and All Angels, Summertown, between September and late May or early June. There is also an opportunity for a cappella singing with the Summertown Singers in the summer. The current online rehearsals are 8.20-9.20pm on a Thursday.
Membership costs for the whole 2019-20 season were £120 for the year. This included music hire. The subscription is waived for those under 30 and is half-price for full-time students over the age of 30, and may be waived or reduced for members in financial hardship.
The cost for the online rehearsals this term – starting on 4 February 2021 and extending to 10 June January 2021 – is £30.
If you would like a free evening’s trial of the online rehearsals before deciding whether to join, please contact our membership secretary for this or for any other queries.
