Come and Join Us!

Summertown Choral Society gives two concerts a year, generally in January/February and May/June, in North Oxford venues. The year consists of two terms, and runs from early September to May or June, with short breaks for Christmas and Easter.

Joining SCS

Summertown Choral Society welcomes new members of all ages, voices, and abilities. There is no audition. Just come along and, if you would like, sing with us in a rehearsal before deciding whether you’d like to join.

This coming term – starting with our first autumn rehearsal on Thursday 8 September 2022 – we will be preparing ourselves for a performance of Haydn’s Nelson Mass (Missa in Angustiis) and Handel’s Coronation Anthems, on 21 January 2023,  to be accompanied by the Instruments of Time and Truth.

Summertown Warm Up

Recent programme

Our most recent live concert – French Romantic Choral Music by Vierne, Franck, Fauré, Saint-Saëns and Gounod – took place on 21 May 2022.

In January 2022, our director, Duncan Saunderson, celebrated the end of the shutdown of live musical activities caused by the Covid pandemic by conducting, with the fabulous support of Instruments of Time and Truth, a memorable performance of Handel’s Messiah, rousing for both audience and choir singers.

A full list of the works sung by the Summertown Choral Society is available on our Concert History page.

Rehearsal time and venue

Rehearsals normally take place on Thursday evenings, 8-9.30pm, in the Church of St Michael and All Angels, Summertown, between September and late May or early June. There is also an opportunity for a cappella singing with the Summertown Singers in the summer (a trip to Porto is planned for this August).

Membership fees

Membership costs for last term term were £75. This included music hire. The subscription is half-price for those under 30 and for full-time students over the age of 30, and may be waived or reduced for members in financial hardship.
