Messiah
Handel

Saturday 29 January 2022 with Instruments of Time and Truth
Conductor: Duncan Saunderson
Elspeth Piggott (soprano), Mercè Bruguera Abelló (mezzo soprano), Tom Kelly (tenor), Daniel Tate (Bass)

Since its first performance in Dublin in 1741, Handel’s Messiah has remained incredibly popular, with performances and recordings all over the world.

It has been 10 years since Summertown Choral Society performed it. The choruses are a fantastic vocal ‘workout’, and there is nothing more exhilarating than singing these wonderfully varied choruses in between the beautiful arias with top professional soloists and instrumentalists.

Our Musical Director, Duncan, knows the work inside out, having sung it countless times, as both an alto and a bass, in the UK and on tour across Europe, in recording with The Choir of New College, Oxford and The Academy of Ancient Music, in Paris with The Tallis Chamber Choir under Sir Jeffrey Tate, in Barcelona with Instruments of Time and Truth under Edward Higginbottom, across Spain with The Choir of the King’s Consort under Robert King, with Norwich Cathedral Choir, and many annual performances with The Choir of St. Bride’s, Fleet Street, under Robert Jones, a long-standing member of The Tallis Scholars.

Duncan writes: “Conducting Messiah with Summertown Choral Society and period instruments to a packed house in 2011 was a fabulous experience for me, and, after the last year and a half, I can’t think of a better time to come together, blow away the cobwebs and get our teeth into it. My only difficulty will be keeping my mouth shut during the singing!”

Tickets £15, under 16s free (but need a ticket).
